104th Infantry Regiment
Colored Civil War Soldiers from South Carolina

Published by - Heritage Books, Inc. (1997)

More than 5,000 colored soldiers from South Carolina served in the Union Army during the period 1862 to 1866. With the exception of recognition for the noteworthy deeds of the 33rd Regiment, USCT, their services have gone unnoticed and their presence is long forgotten -- until now. After more than two years of compiling and editing Pension Records of Colored Civil War Soldiers from South Carolina the author makes the past come alive through the words, deeds, triumphs and sacrifices of 83 colored soldiers who served with the 104th Infantry Regiment, USCT.

During the war approximately 175 regiments of colored troops served the Union but the 104th regiment is somewhat unique because its enlisted rank was composed entirely of newly freed slaves recruited during 1865 from plantations in the Low Country area of South Carolina as the Union Army passed through their communities. Most of these soldiers served under the surname of their former masters and changed their names after discharge from service. These name transition are captured in this book from depositions, affidavits, declarations, medical records, and correspondence used to verify the colored soldier's service in the War.

Imbedded in the eighty-three genealogical and biographical entries in this book, more than 450 surnames are identified, with an index to nearly 2,000 family members, relatives, friends, soldiers, clergy, and other prominent figures in the communities where these soldiers resided when they applied for pension benefits.

While it documents a period of time embedded in our history, the pension records also tell us how people lived during slavery, both slave and slavemaster. This book offers the reader an opportunity to listen to Voices from the Past that tells us how we got to where we are today.
