On April 6, 1917, the United States declared war against Germany and the Central Powers of Europe. When the nation called for able-bodied men to serve their country many of our ancestors answered the call. Below is a list of Gourdins and Gourdines from South Carolina who answered the call.

b. 1896, Moncks Corner, Berkeley County; enlisted on 16 Jul 1918, at Mt. Holly; served in Company A, 1st Provisional Regiment, 155th Brigade; honorably discharged on 18 Sep 1918; 25% disabled.
GOURDINE, Isaiah ( Pvt )
b. 1890, Pineville, Berkeley County; enlisted on 6 Oct 1917, at Moncks Corner; served in Company A, 306th Service Battalion Quarter Master Corps; honorably discharged on 28 Jul 1919.
GOURDINE, James ( Pvt )
b. 1895, Mt. Holly; enlisted on 16 Oct 1917, at Moncks Corner; served in 156th Dep Brigade, to 28 may 1918, then Dep Service Company, 12th Army Service Corps; honorably discharged on 12 Jul 1919.
