Today the Gourdin-Gourdine family enjoys the proud legacy our Afro and
Anglo ancestors established in the Low-Country of South Carolina over the past
300 years.
But following the Civil War and the end of
the Reconstruction Era of the late 1800’s, many South Carolinians of African
descent began to migrate away from the poverty stricken aftermath of the war
and the hostility of antebellum plantation owners.
They migrated progressively north from one
state to another with many finally settling in New York where economic
opportunities were more available and discrimination was less prevalent.
As you might expect, some of our namesakes
were among those early pioneers who ventured north and faced the new
challenges. They traveled along with other venturous men from other local areas
and from other southern states who were moving north, most likely for the same
reasons
During about 1880, or shortly after the end
of the Period of Reconstruction, at least one of our namesakes (yet to be
identified) made his way north to make a new way of life and to start his
family.
This pioneer met and married a northern woman and one of their children was named William, born about 1884. So William, a second generation Gourdine in New York, is quite possibly the first Gourdine born in the state of New York.
William grew up in Brooklyn and at the age
of about 23, he met and married Florence Margaret Hogarth, who was also born
and raised in New York. Both of Florence’s parents were born in the state of
New York.
