Voices from the Past: 104th Infantry Regiment, USCT - Colored
Civil War Soldiers from South Carolina - This scholarly work is a refreshing change from
the typical reference book. It manages to fulfill the usual criteria of containing more than 450
surnames and nearly 2,000 individual names in a fully indexed volume, while simultaneously
providing interest and insight. Primarily, it consists of what could be called a brief life story
of 83 former slaves and/or their survivors as compiled and edited from their Union Army pension
applications.
It is first person narrative of the highest order that tells a fascinating story of
slavery, slave-owners, family, war, freedom, and then of the struggle to establish a documented
identity in a world where surnames were chosen and changed, exact birth dates were unknown, and
marriages unrecorded. This is an excellent reference not only for the Africa-American researcher
but for any reader who seeks to understand the complex social upheavals surrounding the civil
war.
