| The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was to be a
model for the raising up of future colored regiments, a showcase of sorts. But Fort Wagner
changed that. Less than two months after training near Boston, the 54th proved that
colored soldiers could be good soldiers, leading a frontal assault against Fort Wagner,
Morris Island, South Carolina on July 18, 1863. Advancing on a narrow beach at Charleston Harbor, the 54th displayed extreme valor amid heavy casualties.
