Fredericks' hallmark work that offers a different view of the War through the eyes of a brave 12-year-old boy. During the war, young boys accompanied the army onto the battlefield regardless of the danger, serving as drummer boys or personal aides to officers. Hanson was inspired to create Do You Think I'll Make a Good Soldier? from the story of Isaac Wood, Sergeant, Company E, 41st USCI, Fort Harrison, Va., who wrote a letter about meeting a 12-year-old little colored boy in a hospital who had been wounded.
