84th United States Colored Troops

The 84th U. S. Colored Troops was organized on September 24, 1863, at Port Hudson, LA, as the 12th Infantry Regiment (Corps de Afrique). Soldiers of the regiment consisted of free people of color from the area of New Orleans. During the first year of service, they served on Garrison duty at Port Hudson.

On May 22, 1863, Congress established the Bureau of Colored Troops and each new regiment organized were assigned a United States Colored Troops, or USCT, number designition. Later, most of the 12, 1864, the 12th Louisiana Regiment was designated the 84th USCT. On March 14, 1866, the regiment mustered out of service.
