Maj. Martin R. Delany

Physician, Newspaper Editor, Author, Military Officer, and Statesman. Those are just a few words to describe the great American, Martin Robison Delany. Born on May 6, 1812, at Charlestown, Virginia (now West Virginia), Delany, the grandson of an African tribal King, excelled in a variety of endeavors prior to the Civil War. He became one of the leading black nationalist in America and was widely referred to as the father of Black Nationalism.

Delany's crowning glory was, perhaps, a commission from President Lincoln as Major of Infantry with the 104th U.S. Colored Infantry from South Carolina, making him the first black soldier in America’s history to achieve the rank of Major, and the highest ranking field officer to serve during the Civil War.
