The Price of Freedom
| On May 22, 1863, Congress issued General Order No. 143 which established the Bureau of Colored Troops. Soldiers who served in regiments formed under the umbrella of the Bureau came to be known as United States Colored Troops or USCTs. By the end of the Civil War more than 230,000 Black soldiers and their White officers served the Union Army. Nearly 40,000 died during the War -- with more than 1,700 giving their lives on the battlefield. That was a small price to pay for the freedom of more than 4,000,000 Americans held in slavery.
