Courage
| "Courage" is the first of a four part series on the black Civil War soldiers that commemorates the nearly 500 battles and 17 Medals of Honor earned during this nations bloodiest war. Without courage and a desire for freedom for his mother, father, sister, brother and child, the black Civil War soldiers could not have faced the hopelessness of racism and the cruelties of war.
In recognition for their bravery and courage under fire, seventeen soldiers and eight sailors were awarded the Medal of Honor--the highest award bestowed on military servicemen for heroism in combat.
