Courage, Freedom, Honor

| During the American Civil War (1861-1865), more than 200 thousand courageous black servicemen served in 160 combat units and aboard naval vessels, and participated in 46 major ground battles and contributions at sea. The price they paid was astounding with the death of more than 36,000 soldiers. But these former slaves were essential in gaining freedom for more than 4 million African descendants held in slavery.
In recognition for their bravery and courage under fire, sixteen soldiers and eight sailors were received the Medal of Honor --the highest award bestowed on military servicemen for heroism in combat.
