Fort Scott Soldier

The United States Colored Volunteer Infantry joined the Union Army at Fort Scott, Kansas, and fought in the Midwest during the Civil War. Fort Scott was one of the first U.S. Army installations to deploy Colored Volunteer infantry into battle.

Mitchell created Return for Honor, another print featuring these soldiers, but unlike that image, this soldier is shown prior to battle. The clouds of war engulf this frightened man. "Will I live or die?" is just one question haunting this infantryman. There are no answers in these clouds of war only a foreboding uncertainty of an unknown future.
