| Burl Washington captures the image of a typical Colored Civil War soldier. Union Civil War soldiers were not all white soldiers but many freed slaves fought for the union. They were sons and grandsons of many noted Black Americans of that time like Frederick Douglass, Martin Delany and Sojurner Truth--as an example.
