Sergeant Major, 54th Massachusetts

The 54th Massachuesetts Volunteer Regiment is notably the most distinguished black military to serve during the Civil War. Likewise, the rank of Sergeant Major is the highest enlisted rank in the Army. When you bring the two together you have the most distinguish black enlisted man to serve in during the Civil War. Toward the end of the War that position was held by, Lewis Douglass, the son of Frederick Douglass.
