Nathaniel K.Gibbs is a preeminent artist of many talents. His work draws heavily on representational painting and drawing - his chosen interests of expression.
Mr. Gibbs works as a professional artist, mural painter and teacher and has exhibited at commercial galleries, university invitational shows and one-person exhibitions at museums and galleries in Maryland and Virginia. His latest creations consist of two civil war images titled: Maj. Martin R. Delany -- a rendition of a portriat of the highest ranking African American field officer to serve during the civil war, and Little Drummer Boys -- a depiction of young black drummers who supported USCT combat soldiers.
Mr. Gibbs began his artistic endeavors as a fine arts major at the prestigious Maryland Institute, College of Art, specializing in painting, drawing and figurative sculpture and studying under painters Sharon Yates, Roul Middleman, sculptor Tylden Street, and painter/sculptor Joseph Sheppard. It was under Sheppard that Mr. Gibbs became very interested in the "Old Master's" painting techniques.
Mr. Gibbs commenced post-graduate painting study at the Schuler School of Fine Arts, Baltimore, MD, and in 1981 he earned a master’s of fine arts degree from the American University in Washington, DC.
Mr. Gibbs' professional career began as an artist with the City of Baltimore’s Mural Program. His portraits include former Mayor Clarence "Du" Burns. His works have also been a of collections at Baltimore City Hall and the Banneker Douglass Permanent Collection, consisting of portraits of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall and Malcolm X.
Mr. Gibbs was born June 15,1948. He graduated from Baltimore’s Frederick Douglass High School, where he was an art curriculum major in a special program designed for students seeking visual arts careers.
